The Greywolves are a history re-enactment and live action role playing (LARP) group based in the Helsinki metropolitan area in Finland. We started out as a small LARP group, but the Greywolves have grown over the years, and now regularly organize a large variety of activities and events. Our organization is based on volunteer work and membership is open for everyone, even if for the most part the Greywolves are a youth organization. We fund our activities mostly through membership fees and by performing in different Viking-era and medieval festivals and events.
Our organization has a realistic view of history and re-enactment. This means that we try not to romanticize the past. Our main objective is to make the past live again and experience it. We want to know what it was like to live in another time, in a society with different customs and norms. We mainly organize events based on the Scandinavian Viking-era, but we do not rule out re-enacting other times and places either.
Live action roleplaying is one of our most important activities. By getting into the roles of the people of the past we try to get closer to their world or what we imagine it could have been like. In addition to Viking-era LARPs, we also have had games ranging from Tang dynasty China to Central America in the 1950s - basically anything our members are into. There have also been games located in more or less fictious worlds. Central to our games is not so much the time or the place but realism and quality. Our members organize several games during the year.
We also have weekly activities from Autumn to Spring. These currently come in two forms.
On Tuesdays we have combat training with Viking-era weapons and techniques - mainly featuring the use of swords, axes, shields and spears. The aim is to learn how to fight safely with blunted steel weapons. While our "style" is more based on experiments than research, we strive for realism here as well. On Sundays we organize "enlightenment": different activities depending on the week. These include handicrafts, fighting theory, practicing for performances, and different seminars. Some Sundays, we have one-off projects, for example if someone is organizing a game. For more information, contact Jenni Sahramaa / jenni.sahramaa(at)helsinki.fi
